Anime Suggestion: Ookami Shoujo To Kuro Ouji

If you're into cute romances, Ookami Shoujo To Kuro Ouji, or Wolf Girl and Black Prince, is for you.

It's very heart-warming since you get to see someone so cold transform himself into a caring and kind boyfriend. After seeing episode 12, which came out today 12/21/2014, it seems that the season has ended, with no hint of another episode. Though there is a manga, which continues at a longer and more detailed rate, this anime still remains one of my favorite!

So, have some free time? You know what to do.

Description:

The story centers around Erika Shinohara, a vain 16-year-old girl who tells her friends about her romantic exploits, but she actually has no boyfriend. She claims that a handsome boy in a candid photo is her boyfriend, but it turns out that boy is a schoolmate named Kyouya Sata. She has no choice but to make him her fake boyfriend. Unfortunately, Sata may look like a sweet person, but he is actually an ultra-black-hearted sadist. Sata takes advantage of Erika's weakness and treats her like his dog.

And here's the main protagonist:

Anime Suggestion: Sword Art Online

This is a very adventurous anime with a hint of romance mixed in. If you're into drama, this is for you!

Here's the story:

Sword Art Online (SAO) is a Virtual Reality Massively Multiplayer Online Role-Playing Game (VRMMORPG), released in 2022. With the Nerve Gear, a virtual reality helmet that stimulates the user's five senses via their brain, players can experience and control their in-game characters with their minds.

On November 6, 2022, the players log into SAO for the first time, and later discover that they are unable to log out. They are then informed by Akihiko Kayaba, SAO's creator, that if they wish to be free, they must reach the 100th floor of the game's tower and defeat the final boss. However, if their avatars die in-game, their bodies will also die in the real world. One of these players is Kazuto "Kirito" Kirigaya, who was chosen as one of the 1,000 beta testers in the closed beta. Since he had previous experience and knowledge of the game, he felt that he could beat the game easily. As a result, he set out to beat the game on his own. As the game progresses for two years, Kirito eventually befriends a female player named Asuna with whom he ultimately falls in love. After the duo discover the identity of Kayaba's avatar in SAO, they confront and destroy him, freeing themselves and the other players from the game.

Upon being sent back to the real world, Kirito learns that 300 SAO players, including Asuna, still have not awakened yet. Following a clue about Asuna's whereabouts in another VRMMORPG called Alfheim Online (ALO), Kirito also enters the ALO's mainframe. Helped by his cousin Suguha Kirigaya, known as Leafa in the game, he learns that the trapped players in ALO are part of a plan conceived by Nobuyuki Sugō to perform illegal experiments on their minds to put them under his control, including Asuna, whom he intends to marry in the real world in order to take over her family's company. After Kirito foils Nobuyuki's plans, he finally reunites with Asuna back in the real world.

Soon after, Kirito plays another game called Gun Gale Online (GGO) to investigate the mysterious connection between it and deaths occurring in the real world. Assisted by a female player he meets in the game called Sinon, he identifies and exposes the culprits, who include some former members of a murderous guild he previously encountered in SAO.

Kirito is later recruited to assist in testing a state-of-the-art FullDive machine, Soul Translator (STL), which has an interface that is far more realistic and complex than the previous machine he had played. He tests the STL by entering a Virtual Reality world created with The Seed package, named UnderWorld (UW). In the UW mainframe, the flow of time proceeds a thousand times faster than in the real world, and Kirito's memories of what happens inside are restricted. However, he is tricked by one of the murderers from GGO and wakes up inside UnderWorld, leaving him unable to remember how he ended up there or to log out, with his real self left in a comatose state.

Fine By Me - Andy Grammer

You're not the type, type of girl to remain
With the guy, with the guy
Too shy, too afraid to say he'll give his heart to you forever
I'm not the boy who will fall to his knees
With his hands clasped tight
Begging, begging you please
To stay with him for worse or for better

But I'm staring at you now
There's no one else around
I'm thinking you're the girl for me

[Chorus:]
I'm just saying it's fine by me
If you never leave
And we can lay like this forever
It's fine by me

In the past I would try
Try hard to commit to a girl
Wouldn't get too far
It always somehow seemed to fall apart

But with you, you, you
I can see what I need
I can dream realistically
I knew that this was different from the start

And it seems that every time
We're eye to eye
I can find another piece of you
That I don't wanna lose

And I'm staring at you now
There's no one else around
I'm thinking you're the girl I need

[Chorus:]
I'm just saying it's fine by me
If you never leave
And we can lay like this forever
It's fine by me
I'm just saying it's fine by me
If you never leave
And we can lay like this forever
It's fine by me

And it's never easy
Darling, believe me
I'm as skeptical as you
When I think of life without "us"
It seems like "What we're supposed to do? "
But I don't wanna come on too strong

[Chorus:]
I'm just saying it's fine by me
If you never leave
We can lay like this forever
It's fine by me
It's fine by me
If you never leave
And we can lay like this forever
It's fine by me
I'm just saying it's fine by me
If we never leave
And we can lay like this forever
It's fine by me

Everything You Do - He Is We

Do do do do do do do do do
Do do do do do do do do do
Do do do do do do do do do do do

Let me introduce myself,
I’m all smiles.
You may know me as a former ‘most love only last a while.’
Pessimistic, so realistic,
You get the picture.
I met you now my world is so much bigger.

Upside down, off the ground is what you do.

When you touch me, it’s like the very first time.
I’m so lucky, to say that you’re mine.
I still get those stupid butterflies,
But it’s just what you do,
I’m loving everything you do.

Do do do do do do do do do.
Do do do do do do do do do.
Do do do do do do do do do do do.

Crazy how it happened so fast,
Truly blows my mind.
Going on a hunt for four leaf clovers,
To wake up to that smile each sunrise.
Whenever I’m not by your side,
I get home sick.
A little pathetic, with a dash of ooey gooey so romantic.

Upside down off the ground, God I love you.
upside down off the ground is what you do.

When you touch me, it’s like the very first time.
I’m so lucky, to say that you’re mine.
I still get those stupid butterflies,
but it’s just what you do.
I’m loving everything you do.

Do do do do do do do do do.
Do do do do do do do do do.
Do do do do do do do do do do do.

I’m loving everything you do.

Do do do do do do do do do.
Do do do do do do do do do.
Do do do do do do do do do do do.

Yes sir you came and you took my breath,
My head is feeling a little light.
All right, I hope that you feel it too.
Yes sir you came and you took my breath,
My head is feeling a little light.
All right, I hope that you feel it too.

Oh everything you do.

I still get those stupid butterflies,
But it’s just what you do.

(Do do do do do do do do do.
Do do do do do do do do do.

Wait For You - Artist Vs Poet

So you can find me locked up tight in my room tonight
I'm reading warning signs, rewriting all my lines
I won't be giving up, 'till you're giving in girl

But you won't take my hand...

So I'll be asking you,
How high when you tell me to jump
And I'll say how fast when you tell me to run
And I'll say how long when you tell me to wait for you
And that's what I'm gonna do.

And as the room is flooded in bare moonlight
We're dreaming all the time, when I can call you mine
I won't be giving up, 'till you're giving in

But you won't take my hand...

So I'll be asking you,
How high when you tell me to jump
And I'll say how fast when you tell me to run
And I'll say how long when you tell me to wait for you
And that's what I'm gonna do.

Don't say, say that you're still afraid
'Cause your lips give you away
And your body does the same
So I'll be asking you...

How high when you tell me to jump
And I'll say how fast when you tell me to run
And I'll say how long when you tell me to wait for you
'Cause that's what I'll do...

How high when you tell me to jump
And I'll say how fast when you tell me to run
And I'll say how long when you tell me to wait for you
And that's what I'm gonna do.

Yeah oh oh oh
And that's what I'm gonna do.

Hottest Anime/Manga Boys

Zen Wistaria from Akagami No Shirayukihime

Zen’s type of personality is incredibly easy going and is a person who is easy to get along with. He cares for all of his servants and aides who he sees as his friends and shows respect towards them. He especially cares for Shirayuki since the time he has met her, going great lengths to rescue her when she is kidnapped. Though he sneaks out of the castle, delaying his work, he treats his title as a prince seriously and cares deeply for his country. As Shirayuki states he always thinks about his position as a prince and what he can do for his country. He is not one to become extremely angry or sad, though when it comes to any of his friends, he becomes incredibly serious. He keeps his composure most of the time but at times when he is with Shirayuki he can easily become embarrassed and even slightly jealous, mentioning that it was normal for her to work with young guys. He has taken a love for the forest close to his kingdom because it is a place where he can escape to and just be himself, not a prince. Though, while talking to Shirayuki about why he goes to the forest a lot he said this, "But it's different now, since you're here that's all I need." Over all, he has a very respectable, trustworthy, reliable and friendly personality.

Takumi Usui from Kaichou Wa Maid-Sama

Takumi Usui is the male protagonist of the Kaichou wa Maid-Sama manga and anime series. He is the most popular, smart and athletic boy in Seika High. He is first is seen as a "perverted alien" through the eyes of Misaki Ayuzawa but as their relationship grows stronger throughout the series Usui later becomes her boyfriend in Chapter 57 and, in Chapter 85, her fiancé. In the final chapter after ten years he is a doctor and is Misaki's husband.

Kyouya Sata from Ookami Shoujo to Kuro Ouji

He may look like a sweet person, but he is actually a sadist. Gradually he starts to care for Erika and becomes jealous whenever she gets close to other guys. He also develops a protective attitude towards Erika. He is actually more of thunder hiding under the disguise of a sadist.

Yanagi Naoto from Last Game

When Yanagi was young, he was shown to be the "Prince" of his school. He thought of himself as the King of his world. He excels at almost everything and is the target of the female population's admiration, much to the disdain of some boys. When Kujou transferred to his school, Yanagi considered her his rival because he sees her as arrogant even if it's the other way around. He dismissed his tutors and wanted to defeat Kujou with his own strength.
When in front of other people, Yanagi's gentleman side is shown. In front of Kujou, he retains his childish personality. Kujou also stated that even if Yanagi is rich and handsome, he does not show off.
Yanagi is shown to really care about Kujou, although he often denies it. Souma describes him and Kujou as idiots.

Tamaki Suoh from Ouran High School Host Club

Tamaki Suoh is one of two major protagonists in this shojo comedy, the other being his love interest, Haruhi Fujioka. Although his outward manner would be best described as flamboyant, egotistical and dramatic he is, in fact, a young man dedicated to his studies, his friends, and his duties as a host. He is considered the "princely" type, entertaining his female clients with upper-class etiquette and shameless flattery. He views the club as his "family" with himself as the father, Kyoya Ootori as the mother, Haruhi Fujioka as the daughter, Hikaru and Kaoru Hitachiin as the sons, and Honey and Mori as the neighbors. His real family consists of his mother, Anne-Sophie (who he is forbidden to see by his grandmother until late in the manga); his father, Yuzuru Suoh; and his strict paternal grandmother, Shizue Suoh. He is also known to be an accomplished classical pianist.

Shota Kazehaya and Kento Miura from Kimi Ni Todoke

Shota on left, and Kento on right.

Shota is known by many people for being outgoing and cheerful, and Sawako stated herself that she felt Shota was made out of cheerfulness itself. He has always been cheerful and energetic around Sawako, as he wanted to see her smile again and was interested in her, not realizing it was out of feelings of love. He even admitted he had acted however he wanted around Sawako at first. Shota is a caring person to everyone, as he has always helped Sawako, and never wants her to cry. He even comforted Kurumi in middle school, when he asked her if something really was wrong, since he could tell she was crying even though she didn't show it.

Kento Miura is a character in the series Kimi Ni Todoke.
A student in Sawako's class during second year who sits next to her. When Sawako befriends Miura, Kazehaya becomes jealous of him as a potential rival for Sawako. He is interested in girls, particularly Sawako and tries to persuade her to give up on Kazehaya, suggesting that she is burdening him.

Hottest Anime/Manga Girls

Asuna from Sword Art Online

Asuna originally did not care about dying in the game before meeting Kirito. That meeting drastically changed Asuna's personality and outlook on life. She soon takes most things Kirito says to heart and looks to him for help, using him as somewhat of a lifeline. She acts as a thunder towards him for most of Volume 1, even when married.

Shirayuki from Akagami No Shirayukihime

Shirayuki has a very strong-willed and easy going personality. As she was raised in a certain manner she tends not to rely on other people, not wanting them to worry about her, so she hides it when she is feeling ill or when she is injured. Though, after being scolded by Zen, she realizes it's okay to rely on other people. She tends not to want too much attention attracted to herself but because of the shade of her hair it is nearly impossible. When faced with danger she will not stand down; even if she falters, and will pick herself up again. She faces them herself even if there is a risk of becoming injured. Her feelings aren't easily swayed, especially her feelings for Zen, which have been tested many times over the course of the story. She has received words like," Someone with your status will only bring shame to Prince Zen." but even so, she knows how she feels and what they both want. She will openly scold someone when they are being idiotic, stubborn, or rude. Because of her title as a Royal Court Pharmacist, she is very studious and loves to observe the growth of medicinal herbs thus making her a specialist in that particular part of medical research. She is a cheerful person and is not easily angered or saddened. When she is alone with Zen, she can become easily embarrassed when it comes to things like their feelings. Over all she is a very kind and willful person who is easy to get along with and likable in every aspect.

Misaki Ayuzawa from Kaichou Wa Maid-Sama

Before Misaki's dad left her family, she was a gentle, encouraging, and normal girl. However, after that, she became extremely judgmental towards men.
Since the Ayuzawa family was in a debt, she had to go to an inexpensive school, Seika. To tame the unruly boys and protect the girls, she works harder and eventually becomes the first female president. She is extremely strict towards the unruly boys of Seika, causing them to hate her. Because of this, she is known as the "Demon Prez."
Misaki is a very hardworking young woman and is sometimes too selfless for her own good. She is very empathetic towards the girls of Seika. She does not like it when people discourage others who are genuinely working hard.
While she is working as a maid, Misaki has to act dainty and cute, as opposed to her usual rough behavior. She rarely loses her "sweet" act on the job, but Usui makes fun of her often, causing her to get embarrassed and angry.
When it comes to Usui, Misaki is very dense and stubborn about her feelings, not realizing them until the last episode. She acts flustered and very awkward around him and is annoyed by his "stalkerish" ways, nicknaming him "perverted outer-space alien.

Hana & Ageha Mizuki from Papillon: Hana to Chou

Ageha Mizuki
She is the shy protagonist. She's usually quite reserved, and is considered unattractive when compared to her twin sister because of her bangs, glasses, and acne. She shows small signs of jealousy towards her sister's popularity at school, but is a kind-hearted person overall. She was a very outgoing girl, but coming back to the city and seeing her sister made her lose confidence. At the beginning she believed compared to her sister her own existence was meaningless, even at her own home as her mother never seemed to love her as much as she did Hana. After deciding to kill herself once her only friend shows off her diary to the class, Kyuu calls her down and gives her the words of encouragement she needed. She later develops more friends, who help her give her a more girlish appearance to where its hard to tell her and Hana apart and encourage her to go after Ryuusei. It is later revealed that (through Kyuu's help) that her mother sent her to her grandmothers as Ageha would always cry when she held her, making her feel as if Ageha was rejecting her as a mother. She later starts to developed feelings for Kyuu, however after he mistook Hana for her on the day she was sick, Hana sabotages it. Though after getting advice from another teacher (who she originally assumed to be Kyuu because of the horse head mask he was wearing), she thanks Kyuu for all he has done for her, and for accepting her feelings, even if for only a little while. Kyuu realizes that it was Hana pretending to be Ageha and they get back together. There are many more complications later on in this series involving Ageha, Hana, Kyuu, and Ryuusei.

Hana Mizuki
Ageha's twin sister and a popular, beautiful girl at school. She is the type who goes through many boyfriends. She has a determined attitude and believes if you work for a goal, you will be able to obtain it. However, she doesn't often use this trait for good. Hana often manipulates other people to get what she wants, and becomes easily jealous of others, especially her sister. Where every time Ageha shows attraction, she quickly takes him away or makes them believe Ageha (her in disguise) is extremely selfish, even openly admitting to Kyuu that she wishes to prevent her sister from ever attaining happiness. Kyuu compares her to a rose, stating she is "covered in thorns". However, as of recent chapters it is revealed that after a guy she liked confessed to Ageha, she seems to believe that Ageha "stole" her boyfriend and now has the boys she dates go through a secret "lust" test by dressing up as Ageha and see if said guy will betray her. She later shows that she in fact has an inferiority complex towards her sister, as despite her appearance that attracts boys they ultimately want a girl with a personality like Ageha.

Ume Kurumizawa from Kimi Ni Toddle

Earlier in the Kimi ni Todoke manga, Kurumi shows herself as a very cute and nice girl. She was constantly smiling, and Sawako admired her and looked up to her as her role model. She later sheds her fake personality and shows that she can be aggressive and manipulative when it comes to Kazehaya. Kurumi is very honest and upfront about her feelings, later showing that she lacks self-esteem and considers herself to have a "bad personality", something that Sawako vehemently denies. Kurumi is very ambitious and driven no matter what her goal, and is shown to be stressed own and deprived of sleep when studying to become a teacher. As she matures, she becomes more accepting of others' help, such as Sawako's.

Momo Adachi from Peach Girl

Momo is a shy, sweet and insecure girl. However she has a fierce temper, exremely loyal and headstrong. Sometimes Momo can show traits of high jealousy however through out the series she has good reason for feeling that way. Although Momo can be selfish, she can also be very selfless and caring. Over-all she is a normal girl just trying to find her way, while helping others and still trying to help herself.

So basically, just watch/read these anime/manga. You seriously won't regret it. Happy watching/reading!

Uh Oh - Junior Doctor

I've never been good with words
Well, at least not the sweet kind
Somehow when she's around, it's like I just lose my mind
And I know, I know I should just leave it alone
But I won't, I won't
I keep getting in my way
And my friends say I'm crazy
A girl like that would never go for a guy like me

And I know, I know that I should listen to them
But I won't, I won't, I won't

And uh oh, uh oh
I get that feeling and I
Don't know, don't know
How she keeps stealing all the air from my lungs
And leaving all the words stuck on my tongue

It's like I'm not even here
Ran me over as she walked by
Dust off my clumsy words and bad pickup lines
And I know, I know that I can't leave her alone
And I won't, I won't
I try to work up the nerve
Hope to God I don't stutter
My thrown together letters never end up as words

And I know, I know, I should leave it alone
But I won't, I won't, I won't

Now I know that she's so out of my league
But I just can't stop, I keep thinking
Just wait and see, she's gonna notice me
Yeah, I know that she's so out of my league

I've never been good with words
Well, at least not the sweet kind

Manga Suggestion: Skip Beat

Another romantic, love-triangle story. It's cute and amusing and just heart-warming. A must read.

Description:

Skip Beat! follows the story of Kyoko Mogami, a sixteen year-old girl who loves her childhood friend, Shotaro Fuwa, but is betrayed by him. Having spent a large part of her childhood at Shotaro's parents' inn, she learned a great deal about hostelry and other such jobs. Shotaro, not wishing to take over his parents' business, asks Kyoko to run away with him to Tokyo, leaving high school and her life in Kyoto Prefecture behind to help him pursue a career in music. Upon arrival in Tokyo, Kyoko lives an unreasonably frugal life and works multiple jobs to support Sho, as he is called by his fans, spending nothing on herself and doing whatever she can for Sho, who eventually becomes ranked seventh of the top twenty most popular male celebrities of Japan. One day, she overhears Shotaro complaining about her to his manager, saying that she is a boring and plain girl who he thinks of as a doormat. He proceeds to sweet-talk and flirt with his manager, in stark contrast to the cold and demanding attitude he usually exhibits towards Kyoko. Kyoko doesn't shed many tears when she learns that Sho wanted her along only to handle housekeeping duties. Instead, her "Pandora's box" opens and she vows vengeance on Sho. As she is carried away by security, Sho mockingly tells her that if she wants revenge, she had better become a bigger star than he is. And so, Kyoko changes her appearance and enters the entertainment industry, facing many challenges along the way. Skip Beat! follows Kyoko's journey climbing up the showbiz ladder as she meets interesting people, troublemakers and friends alike, with hopes of getting revenge on Shotaro, as well as regaining the sense of compassion that she had lost when her heart was broken by him. Along the way she meets Ren Tsuruga, who at first disapproves of Kyoko but later comes to love her. As Kyoko cultivates her acting and friendships, she soon discovers a sense of self separate from her initial plans for revenge.

Manga Suggestion: Strobe Edge

Another great read!

If you're into the romance, school-story, love-triangle, and comedy, Strobe Edge is for you!

Description:

15-year-old Ninako Kinoshita has never been in love until an encounter on the train with her school's most popular boy, the quiet Ren Ichinose. As she grows closer to Ren, she falls in love with him, but must learn to cope with the unfortunate fact that Ren already has a longtime girlfriend.

Reading Response: Mother Tongue by Amy Tan

These responses are all college work. This one is a short analysis to Amy Tan's Mother Tongue.

---

“I am fascinated by language in daily life. I spend a great deal of my time thinking about the power of language--the way it can evoke an emotion, a visual image, a complex idea, or a simple truth. Language is the tool of my trade.” Amy Tan, Mother Tongue pg. 52

Great art takes inspiration, and inspiration comes from many different sources. It can be a direct experience of your life; it can come from nature, from God; or it can be a person who is close to you. Without inspiration, every work of art will only be a mere reflection of skill without its own story. Amy Tan herself writes all of her work with her mother in mind as the reader, her inspiration. She writes to show the beautiful and passionate side of her mother that people can't see. In "Mother Tongue," Amy Tan describes how all of the Englishes that she grew up with, normal English and "mother tongue" English, has shaped her first outlook of life. And through the essay, Tan wants to send a powerful message of how we ought to view people by their beautiful side, but not by their shortcomings. Writing the essay in narration, Amy Tan has depicted very clearly how "mother tongue" or "broken" English affects her as a child using both her excellent diction as well as the broken usage of English. Throughout the essay, she intelligently weaves many humorous stories to lessen the inevitable dullness of telling someone's past. And even though the essay shows many of her mother's limited usage of English, which can lead the audience to misunderstand her mother, Amy Tan never forgets to express her admiration for her mother. Whenever Amy Tan talks about an experience she had with her mother's broken English, she always includes beautiful and positive vocabulary such as: vivid, full of observation, intimacy, etc. to reintroduce her mother as a very important woman in her life, the person that helped her to see things the way she is seeing things now, the way that makes sense of the world.

Reading Response: Running the Table by Frank Conroy

The following is my analysis on Running the Table by Frank Conroy.

---

“I did not get bored with repetition. Every time a ball went in the pocket I felt satisfaction. When I missed I simply ignored the fact, reset the shot and tried again.” Frank Conroy, “Running the Table” pg. 29

I've played tennis ever since I could remember, but somehow, at eighteen, I still wasn't very good at it. You'd think that ten years of summer leagues and many close cousins who'd been the stars of their teams would have rubbed off on me, but you'd be wrong. I mean, I wasn't completely hopeless. I was pretty fast, and I could strike fast throws back five or six times out of ten, but I wasn't about to be scouted for championship teams.

My team that summer, the Aces, wasn't anything special, either. We had two or three pretty talented players, but most, like me, were just barely what you could call decent. But somehow we'd almost scraped through the first round of playoffs, with only one game standing between us and semifinals. Predictably, the game had come down to the last match, and it was my turn to play. It was like one of those moments you see in movies. The scrawny girl who no one really believed in makes a few miraculous strikes, winning the big game for her team and becoming a local legend. Except my life wasn't a movie, and any hopes my teammates or coach might've had for a last-minute chance to victory were crushed with my missed hits and points lost.

I was inconsolably angry with myself. I spent the entire car ride home tuning out my parents' words of consolation, replaying my match over and over in my head. For the next few days I was miserable thinking about how, if it hadn't been for me, the Aces might have been on their way to a league victory, and nothing anyone said could convince me that the loss wasn't on my shoulders.

About a week later, some of my friends from the team got together at the park to hang out. When I arrived, I was a little surprised that no one seemed to be mad at me. After all, I'd lost us the game, and they had to be disappointed about not making it to the semifinals. It wasn't until we split into teams for an impromptu pickup game that I started to realize why no one was upset. Maybe it was the excitement of reaching the playoffs or the pressure of living up to my cousins' examples, but sometime during that game, I'd lost sight of why most of us played tennis. It wasn't to win the championship, as cool as that would have been. It was because we all loved to play.

Conroy seemed to realize that and cared more for playing the game than actually winning it. He didn’t mind missing a shot and racked up hours and hours of practices to get better. Like Conroy, I didn't need a trophy or a Hollywood come-from-behind win to have fun playing tennis with my friends, but maybe I needed to lose first to remember that.

NYU General Chemistry I Significant Digits Essay

Hi everyone,

As the title says, this is an NYU essay assignment for General Chemistry I for Professor John Halpin. If you're not in this school, but also have to write a response on significant digits, this is it.

The following is the essay question. My response is pasted right after.

Good luck!

Required Length: 3 - 3000 words

Directions: In a logical, grammatically correct essay, describe to the reader the nature of significant figures and the procedures to be used concerning them in this course. Be sure to address the items in the "guiding questions" section, but remember that you are writing an essay, not just answering a list of questions.

In a numerical value, how do you know which digits are significant and which are not?
When performing a measurement, how you know how many significant digits to record?
Comment on the nature of the last significant digit in any measured value.
When you are given a numerical value that is the result of a measurement, what do the number of significant digits tell you about the precision of the measurement? About its accuracy?
What rules are followed in determining the number of significant digits in the answer to a calculation involving measured values?
What is an "exact" number? How does it affect calculations?
In a multi-step calculation, how should significant figures be handled?
How does the course policy on significant figures differ from that of the textbook?
How should you round an numerical result so that it contains the proper number of significant digits?

Follow the links to the web sites found in the "Source Material" section and use your textbook ("Chemistry: The Molecular Nature of Matter and Change", by Martin S. Silberberg) to gather information about handling significant figures. Write a comprehensive, coherent essay concerning the nature of significant figures, how they are recognized, how the are assessed after performing a calculation involving measured data, and how numbers are rounded to the proper number of significant figures. The "Guiding Questions" below are intended to help you to determine what concepts should be included in your essay, but do not simply write a list of answers to those questions - write an informative essay on the subject of significant figures.

My response:

The idea behind significant figures, sometimes called significant digits, is to verify that the amount of precision and answer is not overrepresented when making a big calculation, and thus, is not more precise than the numbers used to compute that answer. In other words, this is just a method to get everyone to understand and consent to one universal way to write a measurement and level of precision behind that measurement.

There are five rules used to determine the amount of significant figures in a number. The first rule is that non-zero digits are always significant. For example, 678 has three significant figures, while 8.3762 has five.

But here’s the tricky part: how about zeros? Well, depending on where the zero is placed, sometimes it can be considered significant, and sometimes it can not. By the second rule, zeros sandwiched between non-zero digits are always significant. Let’s say we have the number 8067. We know that the 8, the 6, and the 7 are all significant digits. However, from the second rule, since the zero is wedged between non-zero digits, it, too, is significant. So there is a total of four significant figures in this value.

Then again, a value doesn’t have to have only one zero, and the zero doesn’t have to be in one place. For example, let’s say we are given the number 206008. Well, since the 2, the 6, and the 8 are significant and since the zeros are sandwiched between them, they, too, are significant. So there is a total of 6 significant figures in this number. The same goes for decimal points. We can have 3.007009, but as long as we have 3, 7, and 9 (significant figures), the zeros between them are all significant. So there is a total of 7 significant figures in this number.

The third rule is that zeros that come before all non-zero digits are never significant. For example, let’s say we are given the number 0.000876. All the zeros that are before, or to the left of, the non-zero digits (4, 9, and 1), are not significant. So there is a total of 3 significant figures in this number. In simple terms, it doesn’t matter how many zeros you have. None of those zeros before the non-zero digits are significant.

However, that rule is used when we have zeros that are before, or to the left of, non-zero digits. What about zeros that come after, or to the right of, non-zero digits? By the fourth rule, if we have zeros that come after non-zero digits, and there is no decimal place in that number, the zeros are not significant. For example, 66,000 has only 2 significant figures. But, if we have zeros that come after non-zero digits, and there is no decimal place in that number, the zeros are significant. For example 8800. has 4 significant figures, while 88.000 has 5 significant figures. In other words, count trailing zeros only if the value has a decimal point.

Lastly, the fifth rule is that for numbers in scientific notation, disregard the exponent and apply the previous rules to the value. For example, 5.6078 x 10^16 has 5 significant figures. Notice the different methods the textbook and lecture notes use to determine significant figures for trailing zeros. While the textbook says that placing a decimal point to the right of the zeros will make the zeros significant (for example, 300. has three significant figures), what we do is use scientific notation to show which zeros are significant (for example, 3.00 x 10^2 has three significant figures). The reason for this method is to avoid ambiguous zeros. For example, if we measure the length of a cabinet and obtain a measurement of 500 cm, who’s to say that the measurement isn’t 499 cm or 501 cm, or even 501.3 cm, long? Since the zeros of 500 cm (with one significant digit) appear ambiguous, we must write it in scientific notation to reduce this ambiguity.

When you make a calculation, you use the right number of significant figures in order to present information about how precise it is. But if in doubt about whether a number is significant, assume that it isn't. For example, if a question asked for 800 L of water, assume the answer to that question is known to one significant figure. In the end, it’s up to you to determine how many significant figures are left, since what you put down presents not only the measurement but also information regarding its quality.

In many measurements, the way to calculate the number of significant figures is to include one estimated digit beyond the values shown on the scale. Why? For example, if we have to measure the length of a table with a ruler, and our essential measurement is 105 inches, we would have to estimate an extra digit since “105” tells us that the random uncertainty is a few parts in the value. That is, the larger the number of significant figures, the more precise the result.

So, this brings in the question whether the idea of significant figures link with precision or accuracy. Well, imagine you were asked to measure the width of a bed several times. Since the ruler you use doesn’t change, you will most likely end up with similar measurements again and again. This is precision, which refers to how close your measurements are to each other. What about accuracy? Well, you don't know if the ruler you used was accurate or not, unless you compare it against a ruler you knew was accurate. For all you know, the ruler may be damaged or stretched, and therefore, impossible for you to know if the values you measured agree with the correct value. Through this, you can see that significant figures are associated only with precision.

Another point worth mentioning is that there are two types of numbers: exact and inexact. Basically, exact numbers do not affect calculations of significant figures, while inexact numbers do. For example, there are exactly 12 eggs in a dozen. An inch has exactly 2.54 cm. And, there are exactly 20 people in a room, not 20.5 or 19.567 people. On the other hand, an inexact number is any measurement. For example, if I measure the length of a piece of paper, I might get 340 mm, or if I am more precise, 341 mm, or even 341.2 mm. In other words, the values I get will never be exact.

This leads to rounding. When rounding with significant figures, there are a few rules used to help retain precision in the final measurement. First, round only at the very end since rounding early means losing significant figures for use in the next calculation. Second, while the textbook wants us to drop the trailing digits followed by a 5 if the last significant digit is even, and round up if the last significant digit is odd, we are not. For our case, if the last significant figure is followed by a 5, 6, 7, 8, or 9, round up. For example, if we have to round 7.688 to to three significant digits, the result will be 7.69. Likewise, if the last significant digit is followed by a 0, 1, 2, 3, or 4, then drop the trailing digits. For example, if we had to round 65,103 to three significant digits, the result will be 65,100, namely, 6.51 x 10^4.

Now that you are familiar with measuring one value, what if we add, subtract, multiply, or divide multiple significant figures? A simple answer is that there are also rules you must use to compute these numbers.

When you only add/subtract measurements, your result can only have as many significant digits as the least significant decimal place of the measurement. For example, if we have to calculate 12.037 - 3.93, our answer can only have 2 significant figures after the decimal point, which in this case, is 8.11.

When you only multiply/divide measurements, your result, without consideration of the decimal point, can only have as many significant digits as the smallest significant number that was used in the calculation. For example, if we have to calculate 2.55 x 4.5, our answer can only have 2 significant figures, which in this case, is 11.

Now what about a multi-step calculation? How would it be handled then? Well, if you are calculating a problem that involves both addition/subtraction and multiplication/division, carry out the arithmetic as you normally would, but keep track of your significant figures during each calculation. In the end, round using the multiplication/division rule. For example, let’s say we have to calculate 3.489 x (5.67 - 2.3). If you can remember from basic math, PEMDAS (parentheses, exponents, multiplication, division, addition, and subtraction) says you have to do the parentheses first. Hence, solving for 5.67 - 2.3, we get 3.37. However, we do not round to two significant digits now because rounding to 3.4 might produce a round off error. Although we use all of our numbers during the calculation, we keep track of the number of significant figures, in this case 2, to use for round off at the very end. Now, solving for 3.489 x 3.37, we get 11.7579. But this isn’t the final answer. Going back to the calculation, 3.489 has 4 significant figures, while 3.37 is supposed to have 2 (as we have mentally marked before). Taking the least number of total significant figures (multiplication/division rule), 11.7579 rounded to two significant figures become 12.

Once again, it’s crucial to remember to only round off at the very end of a calculation to avoid a round off error. Keep at least two extra digits during your calculation for better results.

Reading Response: Shadow Cities by Andre Aciman

This is an analysis, more so my response to Shadow Cities. Feel free to use the ideas here for your essay.

“I wanted everything to remain the same. Because this too is typical of people who have lost everything, including their roots or their ability to grow new ones.” Andre Aciman, “Shadow Cities” pg. 21

I was shipped to China right when I was born. It was only after 10 years that I was brought back to America. The minute the plane landed, I felt the automatic distance with my homeland expand.

As I started going to school in America, I couldn’t keep up with the culture that most people had adapted to when they were little. The jokes they made, the actions they did, and the events they attended were all jumbles of puzzlement to me. This wasn’t just a feeling of being excluded but rather a stronger feeling of being exiled. Everywhere I went, after making it to a few lines, no one wanted to continue talking.

I had never felt so alone in a place that was considered home to me. And like Aciman, I wanted everything to remain the same. Why did I have to adapt to a new environment when the new environment could adapt to me? Confusing as it sounds, the feeling that I had to learn new traditions and absorb new cultures terrified me.

I was only ten years old. And with the busy environment my parents had to face (each mastering two jobs and caring for their small business), there was no way I could ask them for help, especially for something as easy as fitting in. Unlike America, China incorporated a custom that involves self-assessment and self-dependency. It’s the theme of every Chinese literature class and the story every Chinese parents insisted on telling.

But this wasn’t a story for me to tell. As much as I hoped everything was a math equation that could be fixed with a formula, it’s not. This was real life, with real people, and real conversations, not just some paper and problem you pick at with your pen.

The feeling of loss and loneliness is just too strong to get replaced with feelings of novelty as change is something we all don’t want to experience. However, one thing we should all realize is that we have to come to accept the world for what it is. Regardless of how much we might dislike it, life’s a process we should all gradually come to treasure.

General Chemistry Tips: Finding Your Professor @ New York University (NYU)

Whether you're an incoming freshmen or a rising junior, and want to head into General Chemistry, face it: you'll not only have a lecture class, but also a recitation and a lab. And the big problem most students have is finding the best professors to teach them the basics of chemistry. So, are you confused on what the course is like? What professors to pick? Or what you should do with your college career? While I'll talk more about the pre-health, or in your terms, pre-med, track at NYU in future posts and videos, this is just a big picture of what you should expect (and my suggestions) for General Chemistry (usually the first class, paired with biology, you'll take on the pre-health track).

Unless you're in some kind of advanced chemistry class, your professor for your lecture is most likely John Halpin (since he's the only one at NYU teaching General Chemistry). Halpin is very fair and his lectures mostly capture the gist of the chapter you're on. Suggestion: Go to his office hours, and ask him for clarifications. One quick note: I'm referring General Chemistry to both General Chemistry I and II, which will be taken over a course of a year.

However, your recitation and lab are open for you to choose. Now before you hastily pick out your schedule, it's important to know the times and professors you pick are big impacts on you and your ability to improve. Don't take this the wrong way: I'm not saying there are "bad" professors; every professor has their own unique way of teaching. But it's up to you to find a professor who matches YOUR way of learning.

This leads to the common question almost every college student asks: Why a recitation and lab? That's three times the work! Sure, classes (usually) only has lectures. But for those of you who are relying on lectures to get you through, think about it: just how many students are on the pre-health track? This year (2014), we have over 600 students. That's right: over 600!! Our lectures are held in an auditorium, and there are literally students upon students before you. Meaning, unlike your ordinary class (sometimes small), Halpin cannot focus on you all (individually)! Which is exactly why you have a recitation and a lab. And here's the deal (and secret): Yoel Ohayon is the GUY you MUST choose for both recitation and lab.

But, if you're new, you might ask: why for both? Shouldn't I be trying new professors and obtain a variety of insights? And I have to say, yes, that's absolutely correct. On any other occasion, I would have to agree. But Yoel is your CHEMISTRY. He's a brilliant guy who has a humorous taste to make learning fun. He really, really wants you to improve and he really, really wants you to succeed. One thing for sure (and this is the first thing I noticed about him): He's very chill and playful, which can be extremely stress-relieving especially when you are bogged down by all the new chemistry concepts (which was the case for me since I had never taken AP Chemistry, and learned the bare minimum from regular chemistry in high school).

In fact, if you're registered for General Chemistry, and have a Facebook, you'll most likely get an invite from Yoel to join a Chemistry Facebook Group. This is where you can ask all kinds of questions ranging from homework, to quizzes, to jokes, to politics, etc. And it's also a great group to meet new people who are on the same track as you.

Is this from personal experience? Yes, and no. I didn't have Yoel for my lab OR recitation simply because, well, I wasn't fast enough. And if you don't have him, that's okay too. It's not the end of the world. Never EVER think that. Yoel has office hours and he is open to anyone who wants a good kick in the head of chemistry. Just let him know beforehand of the day you're planning to drop by!

Don't believe me? Ask anyone who has taken General Chemistry or is in General Chemistry at NYU. Check out RateMyProfessors. Or better yet, ask Yoel himself!

SO, my suggestion would be to go to Yoel! It's the decision of your future. (no dramatic pun intended)

Happy chemistry hunting!

Yes, that's the professor!

English Translation:

I wished
That time would stop
Common sense
Doesn't do any good
And it doesn't mean anything
Don’t tell me
Your ideals that are all talk

One step above you on the escalator
My eyes are exactly level with yours
Um, you see...
I felt a rush of love
And kissed you

I’d see you again tomorrow
And the next day
That
Was a given...
There’s a place I want to go back to
There’s a reason I can’t go back
I watched the summer end

I wanted to see you, it wasn't enough
But you were leaving
And I didn't want to stop you
I work part time but it pays peanuts
Loving you isn't enough to make it work
Quite a bit of time has gone by without you
And then suddenly you appear
Saying “Long time no see”
We had such a short summer together
You were there, but not my lover

Talking about work
Talking about our friends
Getting married
Having kids
It looks like everyone’s
Grown up a little
In their own way

“I’m going home tomorrow morning”
You said a little sadly
You waved
And turned back to me again and again
Just like before

“You mean a lot to me”
I love you
So I just believed what you said
There’s a place that brings back memories
There’s a place where I dreamed
The end of the summer when we laughed together

They weren't a mistake
The smiles and tears I used for you
I've been in love with all kinds of people
But you’re the one who’s made me smile and cry the most
I’m realizing now that we’re similar people
So we’ll still be together from now on
Some relationships are like this, aren't they?
Next time I’ll smile and say
“See you, bye”

I know you pretty well
Don’t hold back
If anything happens
I’ll listen any time
So tell me all about it

The letters you only sent
On my birthday
And the phone calls when we fought over who would hang up first
I was able to talk with a smile
And say “I miss those times”
And that we were cute

I’m glad we met
I’m glad it was you
I thought that again and again
You went home
Saying “I’ll be in touch again”
The end of the summer was a little hot

Kimi Ni Todoke: Sawako Kuronuma

Sawako Kuronuma is the character of the year. YES!

Who the hell can be afraid of this face?! Honestly, she's beautiful, even when she isn't smiling.
